SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the direction of the Grounds Foreman, the Groundsperson performs maintenance and preventative maintenance year around on turf, shrubs, trees, fences, parking and sidewalk surfaces, irrigation, landscaping, cleaning and snow removal of all outside areas adjacent to buildings and property of the School District. This classification also provides support for Food Delivery, Athletic events and activities, and fills in for the Central Supply Coordinator.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs maintenance and preventative maintenance on all grounds surrounding District building facilities and all District land adjacent to buildings.
  • Plans, prioritizes, and performs daily grounds operations, tasks, and duties.
  • Provides full upkeep of lawns, athletic fields, trees, shrubs, flowerbeds, irrigation systems, retaining walls, concrete, playgrounds, flagpoles, fences, trash cans, litter, graffiti removal, and storm damage repair.
  • Provides maintenance and upkeep of all equipment used by grounds staff.
  • Instructs seasonal (summer staff) on proper operation of equipment and skills for grounds maintenance.
  • Operates a variety of machines and equipment used for grounds maintenance.
  • Provides physical and logistical support for Food Service Delivery needs.
  • Loads and unloads trucks with food supplies and equipment.
  • Delivers freight between and among the schools in the District.
  • Provides physical and logistical support for Athletic events.
  • Sets up equipment and provides field preparation for and to each sporting event held outside.
  • Takes down and puts away all related equipment from each sporting event.
  • Cleans up trash after sporting events.
  • Restores fields for appropriate multi-use functions.
  • Completes work orders sent from staff for a variety of instructional and after-school extra-curricular activities and programs.
  • Hauls items from building to building such as: school records, books, furniture, AV equipment, computers, stages, risers, chairs, tables, books, scaffolding, musical instruments, office equipment, fuel, cleaning equipment, classroom barriers, desks and paper.
  • Provides snow and ice removal during winter season.
  • On call for snow removal or other weather conditions.
  • Operates dump trucks, loaders, plows, and other snow removing machinery.
  • Spreads salt and chemicals, shovels sidewalks and walkways.
  • Performs oil, fluid, and tire checks; cleaning, washing and vacuuming; replacing blades and sharpening blades; assists in maintaining grounds equipment, tools and vehicles.
  • Performs other duties of a comparable level or type, as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of requirements of the fundamentals of landscaping, tree care, lawn/turf care and general ground facilities (parking lots, buildings, etc.).
  • Knowledge of tools, equipment, machines, and materials used in maintaining grounds and outside facilities.
  • Preventive maintenance practices and procedures for tools, equipment, and machinery.
  • Knowledge of District safety procedures and requirements in the operation of large machinery, powered equipment, mowers, chemicals, etc.
  • Knowledge concerning the set-up of fields and equipment for various athletic events and the maintenance of athletic fields.
  • Operating and maintaining all equipment associated with grounds maintenance, snow removal, tractors, and accessories.
  • Laying out, marking, and maintaining athletic fields.
  • Conducting routine preventive maintenance to grounds equipment, machinery, and tools.
  • Operating mowers, irrigation systems, and sprayers.
  • Reading and understanding documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Applying basic mathematics in determining areas, quantities, adding, subtracting, dividing, and multiplying units of measure.
  • Communicating and cooperating with District staff, supervisors, building administrators, and other District employees.

  • Work may involve working with herbicides, fertilizers, and various other chemicals. Position holders are exposed to some potential hazards and risks associated with the performance of the work including exposure to various hazardous chemicals, fumes, physical injury from operating heavy equipment and power equipment (i.e. mowers, saws, bobcats, loaders, etc.).
  • Duties are performed outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and subject to unexpected call in due to snow removal and weather conditions

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or N/A
  • At least three (3) to six (6) months related previous experience is required to gain entry to the job.

CERTIFICATION, LICENSE, REGISTRATION

  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Must obtain required Special Class Boilers License within 180 days and 2nd Class Boiler License within 1 year of obtaining Special Class Boiler License
